Spoilers for Citadel episode 1 & episode 2 below! On the heels of Citadel‘s high-octane two-episode series premiere, leads Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden tease season 1’s revelatory finale. After a mission goes terribly wrong aboard a high-speed train in Italy, elite spies Nadia Sinh and Mason Kane are separated in the wreck and suffer from severe amnesia. After eight years living separate lives, the two are reunited by their mysterious handler Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci).
In a recent interview with Collider, Chopra Jonas and Madden tease Citadel season 1’s finale. When asked about their favorite episodes to film, both actors share they had the best experience shooting episode 6, revealing the finale holds the answers to all questions set up by the premiere. Read what the pair says below:
MADDEN: It’s going to be [episode] 6. We plant so many seeds throughout the show and jump through so many timelines. Everything collides, and all the payoffs happen in the sixth episode. I mean, every episode has a big chunk of the journey, but I love Episode 6.
CHOPRA JONAS: I would say that that’s a hard one to pick, but I have to agree with Richard. So many questions get answered, and you have so many other questions by Episode 6 because you’re so invested in everyone’s stories, and there are some amazing revelations to look forward to.
Citadel Has Already Set Up An Intense Conclusion
Instead of beginning after its leading heroes are stricken with amnesia, Citadel chooses to show the mission leading to Mason and Nadia’s affliction at the start of its series premiere. Tasked with retrieving illicit nuclear material, the spies quickly realize they have been set up by a powerful secret organization called Manticore. However, the origins of the betrayal the Citadel agents face leaves many questions for the remaining four episodes to answer, and their resolution could feature a devastating twist.
Following Citadel episode 2, Bernard looks like a suspicious figure. He went mysteriously silent during Mason and Nadia’s final mission, and reemerged eight years later seemingly untouched by the organization-wide betrayal. As the witty technician was captured by Manticore in Citadel episode 2, perhaps he simply managed to avoid the wide-reaching grip of the shadowy group for the better part of a decade. Episode 3 may reveal more of Bernard’s background through the interrogation he has yet to endure, but if he does end up being the person who betrayed Mason and Nadia, Citadel will certainly have a gripping finale.
As the twisted tale unravels over the course of Citadel season 1, with jumps between various timelines, Chopra Jonas and Madden’s comments should give comfort that the Prime Video thriller will have plenty to explore in its second run. With multiple spinoff shows set for production in Italy, India, Mexico, and Spain in Prime Video’s experimental attempt to build a worldwide franchise, Citadel will likely leave enough behind to fuel numerous stories.
Citadel releases new episodes Thursday nights on Prime Video.
