Steve Martin has seemingly let slip the release date for Only Murders in the Building season 3. The mystery comedy-drama series debuted on Hulu in 2021, following three true crime podcast fans and neighbors who start their own podcast while trying to solve a murder in their apartment building. Starring Martin, Selena Gomez, and Martin Short, Only Murders in the Building has been met with critical acclaim, and was renewed for season 3 last year.
According to Variety, Martin mentioned the release date offhandedly during his You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today! comedy tour alongside Short. While sharing what they had been working on lately and showing pictures of their fellow Only Murders in the Building cast members, Martin told the audience to “Catch the new season August 8.” This seemingly confirms the release date for Only Murders in the Building season 3, with the new season premiering about a year after the season 2 finale.
What We Know About Only Murders In The Building Season 3
Only Murders in the Building season 2 ended with a one-year time jump. Paul Rudd made his series debut as Ben Glenroy, an actor who is mysteriously murdered during the opening night of a production directed by Oliver Putnam (Short). This set up season 3 to follow Oliver and his friends and fellow podcasters Charles-Haden Savage (Martin) and Mabel Mora (Gomez) as they try to solve Ben’s murder, their first case that takes place outside the confines of their apartment building.
Rudd will join the Only Murders in the Building cast after his cameo in the season 2 finale. Meryl Streep joins the season 3 cast as well, along with other series newcomers including Emily in Paris and Broadway star Ashley Park and Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams. The roles of Streep and Williams have been kept under wraps, but Park will play a Broadway ingenue named Kimber. Despite their important roles in seasons 1 and 2, Nathan Lane and Amy Ryan shared that they did not return for season 3.
Behind-the-scenes photos show Mabel in a wedding dress, leading to speculation about what this means for season 3. Mabel had love interests in the previous seasons, but she was not in any known committed relationships by the end of Only Murders in the Building season 2, although that may have changed during the one-year time jump. If the release date Martin mentioned is correct, it will only be a few more months until the mysteries of Mabel’s wedding dress, who Streep and Williams are playing, and who murdered Ben are revealed in Only Murders in the Building season 3.
