As the X-Men’s third annual Hellfire Gala quickly approaches, Marvel has begun to release the iconic fashion looks of the party’s invited attendees, with Miles Morales‘ Spider-Man showing off his most fashionable outfit since his debut.
The X-Men’s Hellfire Gala is an ostentatious and impressively attended party thrown by Emma Frost on the mutant nation of Krakoa. Each year various Marvel heroes, dignitaries, and politicians show up and show off, typically followed by lots of drama, and some type of deadly assault.
Miles Morales, Brooklyn’s young and powerful Spider-Man, has always been a fashionable hero since his 2011 debut in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe. However, Bernard Chang’s truly gorgeous Hellfire Gala variant cover for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #8 – from writer Cody Ziglar and artist Federico Vincentini – gives Miles his most iconic alternate look yet. This new outfit was recently revealed by Marvel and impressively combines the young man’s streetwear style with various Spider-Man vibes.
Miles Is No Stranger To Iconic Streetwear Looks
Miles Morales is perhaps most famous for being the first Afro-Latino Spider-Man hero, as well as the most prominent character from the Ultimate Universe to be brought to the main Earth-616 reality after the prior multiverse ended in 2015’s Secret Wars. However, besides his impressive heroism and complex multiversal origins, Morales is also known for his strong attachment to his home community of Brooklyn, as well as his relatable struggles as a young man juggling a variety of difficult parts of his life. While Miles is perhaps not known for his impeccable style, his black and red costume was an iconic update to Peter Parker’s classic Spider-Man suit, and has gotten him attention from fans of his both in and out of the Earth-616 universe.
As a celebration of Miles’ 10th anniversary as a Marvel hero, the visual artist and comics illustrator Chase Conley gave Morales a new heroic costume, inspired by current trends in streetwear fashion, which first debuted in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #30 from writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Carmen Carnero. Spider-Man’s new look ditched his classic black and red costume in favor of a black and neon pink color scheme, with Miles sporting a sweatshirt and custom sneakers. While fans had mixed reactions to the new look, it was undeniably a bold costume, and stuck with Miles through the end of Saladin Ahmed’s run on the series in issue #42.
Bernard Chang’s design for Miles’ Hellfire Gala costume is honestly impeccable, masterfully giving Morales a high-fashion streetwear costume design while making it incredibly clear that this is still a Spider-Man. Sporting some stunning high-lace sneakers, a blazer with the perfect Spider detailing and fabric, and a tailcoat, the bow tie-ed look is one of Miles’s best ever. Plus, Chang’s costume for Miles features a half-mask, showing off the young hero’s Afro-Latino identity, an integral part of Morales’ character, history, and heroism.
Spider-Man’s Fashion Prodigy Franklin May Have Designed His Gala Look
Miles Morales’ new Spider-Man costume, first revealed back in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #30, was designed in-universe by the teenage fashion prodigy Kenneth Kingston. Kenneth is a non-binary junior high schooler whom Miles befriended, and made not only his fresh new costume but also a gorgeous suit for the hero when he won a writing contest at his prestigious school. While snagging a Hellfire Gala cover is never a guarantee that the character will actually feature in the Gala itself, it would be awesome if Miles was even a minor part of the mutant celebration, and canonically confirmed that his stunningly fashionable streetwear look was designed by his friend Kenneth.
Miles Morales is undeniably the more fashionable of the two main Spider-Man heroes, and Bernard Chang’s gorgeous new design for Miles’ first Hellfire Gala easily gives the powerful young hero his coolest costume to date.
