Tierra Whack is back with a new single, “Chanel Pit,” and an accompanying music video. Stream it below.
Produced by Nick Verruto, “Chanel Pit” finds the Philly rapper and singer sprinkling a variety of references to Microsoft Excel, Resident Evil, and Vin Diesel alongside fashion designers like Rick Owens. “Mosh pit smell like Chanel” she raps on the chorus. “Yes, Microsoft, I’ma excel/ Mhm, nine, ten, eleven, fuck 12.”
In the typically whimsical visual treatment, directed by frequent collaborator Alex Lill, Whack goes through an automated car wash without actually sitting in a vehicle. Watch the video below.
Whack spoke about “Chanel Pit” in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, during which she explained the song has been sitting around for a while. “I made it a few years ago,” she said. “I have a lot of music stacked, but it’s something about anytime I would play that song for people, their eyes would just light up. I mean, I felt the same way, but just to get the reaction of friends and family, strangers, and it just feels so special to me. I think I wrote it down in my notes and then I went to the studio and I just was like, I got to start with this line: ‘Mosh pit smell like Chanel.’ I actually was in the mosh pit. I was going crazy, just having fun.”
She also teased her upcoming sophomore album, which is slated to arrive in early 2024. “Top of the year, it’s coming. I promise,” Whack said. “It’s done. It’s finished. We’re just making it all make sense, putting the pieces together, and we’re giving it to you.”
Earlier this year, Whack appeared on “In the Room” alongside JID and BJ the Chicago Kid from the Creed III soundtrack. Back in 2021, she dropped a series of genre-themed EPs called Rap?, Pop?, and R&B? Her upcoming album will mark the proper follow-up to her groundbreaking 2018 debut album, Whack World.
